Don Bosco Field School and Model Farm, Sengipatti, has been a centre for promoting organic and sustainable agricultural practices. It provides hands-on training and learning opportunities for various groups, including farmers, students, and young people. It also serves as an exposure-visit destination for educational institutions and organisations Beyond this, the Field School offers a peaceful environment for reflection on nature, reconnecting with the natural world, and relaxation
As part of their social work curriculum, students from the Department of Social Work, Holy Cross College, accompanied by faculty members Dr. Sumathi and Mrs. Kalpana, participated in a field camp at Sengipatti Field School.
During their stay, the students received special training in organic farming and animal husbandry. Through practical sessions and hands-on experiences, they gained valuable knowledge about sustainable agricultural practices and experienced the benefits of consuming organically grown food.
The training helped the students understand the environmental impacts of pesticides and the potential health hazards associated with the use of chemical substances in agriculture. Exposure to such chemicals can lead to acute and chronic health problems, including respiratory and neurological disorders, as well as other long-term illnesses. Organic farming helps minimise these risks by limiting the use of synthetic chemicals. Furthermore, organically grown crops may contain higher levels of certain micronutrients.
The experience gained through this field camp encouraged the students to develop a greater understanding of environmental sustainability, responsible agricultural practices and climate resilience.
